I've been loving viewing different representations of the Old West in films over the last few weeks, including the greatest of the Spaghetti Westerns, such as this one. "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" is a sprawling epic set in New Mexico during the American Civil War in 1862. Many people are unfamiliar with the Civil War history represented in this film, which is a compelling incentive to watch it in and of itself. At the 1862 Fight of Glorietta Pass, the Union Army repulsed a strong Confederate assault across the Southwest toward California, a battle recognized by historians as one of the war's pivotal confrontations. This film is set during the Confederate withdrawal after the loss of its supply trains during the fight.
