By the 1950s, as the parts of what would become their sixteenth completely animated feature film started to fall into place, Walt Disney and his company had reverted to the single story style that had brought in the animated motion picture to widespread acclaim over two decades earlier. However, unlike the three previous animated films released by Disney – Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, and Peter Pan – Lady and the Tramp was inspired by no famous work of literature, but rather by the ideas of Disney's story department and Ward Greene, a writer whose short story assisted Walt and company in deciding where to take their tale about dogs. In 1937, Joe Grant, a story artist at Walt Disney Productions, was inspired by the antics of his English Springer Spaniel Lady and how she was "pushed aside" by Joe's new baby. Lady and the Tramp was initially released on VHS tape and Laserdisc in 1987 in North America as part of the Walt Disney Classics video series, and in 1990 in the United Kingdom. It was claimed that at the conclusion of its original home video release, it had sold over three million copies, making it the best-selling videocassette of the time.
